Equal Love Rally August 10, 2007

Sunday 12 August 2007 is Equal Love’s National Day of Action

The NDA is Melbourne’s mass rally in favour of same-sex relationship
recognition. Three years ago, the Federal Parliament amended the
Marriage Act to deny same-sex couples access to marriage. While we
have achieved much at the state level with the proposed Relationships
Register, as the recent report from the Human Rights and Equal
Opportunity Commission showed, there is still much inequality in a
range of federal legislation.

In an election year – we must show federal candidates that we demand EQUAL LOVE!

When: 12 August 2007
Where: Assemble 11.30am in front of State Library
What: Rally to Federation Square for MidWinta Vows
Who: Bring yourself, your friends, your family, whoever!
Wear: Bright, festive and red colours!

Last year, almost 5,000 people rallied on State Parliament. This
year, we can do better. So come out in your RED colours and join
EQUAL LOVE on 12 August 2007.

Cut and pasted from http://www.vglrl.org.au/

If you can, please join in, legal recognition of a loving partnership is a fundamental right that is currently being deniened to the GLBT community in Australia. It is important for our voices to be heard!

Polish watchdog: Teletubbies promotes homosexuality May 29, 2007

Teletubbies face new gay claim

Ewa Sowinska, government-appointed children rights watchdog, told a local magazine published today she was concerned the popular BBC children’s show promoted homosexuality.

She said she would ask psychologists to advise if this was the case.

In comments reminiscent of criticism by the late US evangelist Jerry Falwell, she was quoted as saying: “I noticed (Tinky Winky) has a lady’s purse, but I didn’t realise he’s a boy.”

“At first I thought the purse would be a burden for this Teletubby … Later I learned that this may have a homosexual undertone.”

Poland’s rightist government has upset human rights groups and drawn criticism within the European Union by apparent discrimination against homosexuals.

And it gets worse:

Polish Education Minister Roman Giertych has proposed laws sacking teachers who promote “homosexual lifestyle” and banning “homo-agitation” in schools.

But at least there’s some sanity in the Polish government:

But in a sign that the government wants to distance itself from Sowinska’s comments, Parliamentary Speaker Ludwig Dorn said he had warned her against making public comments “that may turn her department into a laughing stock”.

Highly distressing images from Russia.

Moscow gay rally turns ugly

Peter Tatchell was among a group of activists detained by police in central Moscow during the demonstration by dozens of homosexual rights activists campaigning for an end to sexual discrimination.

Mr Tatchell earlier had been punched in the face in full view of police and dozens of journalists. Another activist was seen bleeding from his face after being attacked.

Punches and kicks flew and eggs and insults were hurled when the activists defied a state ban and briefly staged the city’s second ever Gay Pride march.

The footage of gay people being assaulted and then being ARRESTED by the Russian police is beyond belief.

My heart weeps for the world.

Gay Footy, is a website for gay aussie rules football fans. The site featured a photo gallery of footballers during games, training etc. Recently the AFL Players Association took exception to some photos on the site, ones they claim were taken by mobile phone cameras, and threatened to sue the web master unless he removed the offending pictures. Subsequently the web master decided to remove the entire gallery.Well, anyway Mark Doran, on the sport radio station SEN, brought up the issue of paedophilia. It was regarding a photo of a footballer holding his baby daughter. Now, when I saw that picture at the site I thought it was inappropriate but any idiot could see there were no paedophilic links. The footballer was the main focus of the photo. Out of hundreds and hundreds of photos, it was the only one to show a child. The site contained absolutely no pictures of children by themselves, so it’s extremely offensive for the subject of paedophilia to be raised.Mark Doran is perpetuating a myth that sees many gay men feel uncomfortable around children because of this cruel stereotype. It takes a bigoted moron to make the leap from a slight lapse of judgement to child molestation, or perhaps that should read bigoted Doran.

There was also an incident involving Saint Nick Riewoldt on Triple M. During a word association game the word “homosexual” was thrown out and Riewoldt replied “Die!” The rest of the radio show’s participants burst into laughter. (Is there anything worse than the sound of commercial radio buffoons laughing at their own dumb jokes?)

Nick has apologised to the Australia gay community, saying he is sorry and that he never meant to cause any offence. The remark was meant as a joke towards his fellow presenters, who tease him with accusations that he is gay. The radio program isn’t broadcast live, and apparently Riewoldt wanted to have the remark edited out when the show went to air. Obviously it wasn’t.

When I first heard about this I was extremely angered. When I found out it was Nick Riewoldt who had made the remark my anger turned to disappointment. Do I think Riewoldt is truly homophobic? No. I feel that his apology was sincere, and accept his explanation that “Die!” was directed at his fellow radio presenters and not at gay people. But you also must question the motives behind whoever decided that “homosexual” would be used in the game.

I hope all of this hasn’t made you think Melbourne radio is a cesspool of homophobic hate. Ironically I have been planning a detailed guide to the gems of Melbourne radio, many of which can be listened to over the net by anyone around the world. I think Melbourne has a wonderful and diverse network of radio stations, including Joy FM, one of Australia’s only gay and lesbian network.

To end this post on a completely off-topic note, the movie Calendar Girls is on in the background, and I can’t help but notice what a stunningly gorgeous woman Helen Mirren is.

Hillary Clinton on Ellen July 4, 2006

Wow. I can’t believe what I’ve just seen. Hillary Clinton interviewed on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. The studio audience were total fuckheads, giving Hillary a standing ovation. And Ellen was drooling all over her “special guest” (special as in mentally challenged). I’ve been a big fan of Ellen DeGeneres for ten years. I have almost every episode of her sitcom Ellen on tape, I’ve bought her books and CDs and enjoyed her HBO specials.

Well, now I’ve lost a whole lot of respect for her. To not only have that cunty warmonger on her program, but to treat her with such dignity is horrifying. It only becomes even more idiotic when you consider that Ellen is a pioneering lesbian in the US entertainment industry. How she could be so nice to such a homophobic bitch is totally beyond me.

I feel so disappointed. Ellen DeGeneres, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Hate masquerades as concern in gay marriage debate June 20, 2006

Today The Age is reporting the results of a poll they conducted in conjunction with ACNielsen. It says 45 per cent of people polled said they supported gay civil unions in Australia. This comes after the Federal Government quashed laws in the ACT that would have allowed homosexual couples to legally recognise their relationship. Last week the Senate voted to agree with the Howard Government, 32-30.

A spokesperson for the Attorney-General said "the Government believes that the definition of marriage is quite clear and enshrined in the common law …"

Please! I’m getting real sick of this crummy defence. I’d believe all this pleading for the sanctity of marriage garbage if they did one thing: make divorce illegal.

What makes “you are now husband and wife” superior to “till death do us part.”? Or, in fact, superior to richer or poorer, for better or for worse, sickness, health and all that jazz. Why is all of that thrown out the window, and yet “you are now husband and wife” somehow becomes the strongest, most important vow of all?

The hoo-ha over gay marriage seems to make those other, supposedly lesser vows, irrelevant. Which is a tremendous shame. Some politicians are trying to toughen up the so-called Federal Marriage Act. I think it is a horrible waste of time and resources, especially at a time when almost half of all marriages fail. How exactly do you protect and support marriage, when so many marriages end in divorce, by stopping people who wish to get married?

We are always being told by politicians and those who oppose gay unions that the vows of marriage are sacred. These vows explicitly state that marriage is between a man and woman. So therefore gay marriage would be ruining the meaning of marriage. But such talk is pointless rubbish. Until divorce is made illegal, thus sanctifying the “’till death” bit, it is quite obvious that politicians don't give two hoots about the sanctity of unions. Their rallying in defence of marriage is nothing but unadulterated homophobia.

The Age also has a very positive gay news story today: Helping gay kids become part of the in crowd
